Our Focus for Crisis Phase in Padang: Shelter, Beddings, Water and Psychological First Aid

Thursday, October 15, 2009

Having considered the rapid assessment, level of damage, presence and capacity of international aid assistance as well as the breadth of assistance requested by the Government of Indonesia, CWS is looking at conducting 2 months of crisis intervention and another 10 months of post-crisis intervention in Padang Pariaman district.  The area is one of the most damaged areas due to the 7.9-magnitude earthquake that hit West Sumatra province around two weeks ago.

Most people lose their shelter and bedding while putting up with bad weather, the cause of most natural disasters. Therefore, simple non-food items such as tents, tarps and bedding materials such as mats, blankets and mosquito nets become the most wanted items -  and the most beneficial - in post-disaster settings.

Shelter and Beddings
CWS plans to help 5,000 earthquake-affected households with non-food items such as tents, tarps, mats, blankets, baby kits, mosquito nets and cooking utensils during the first 2 months after the disaster. In providing non-food items, CWS will use the international set of humanitarian aid standards known as Sphere.

Access to Water
In addition to shelter, clean water is another essential item. Most in the affected areas have no access to clean water and, as such, CWS plans to help 5,000 households with water supply, hygiene and sanitation facilities.

Psychological First Aid
It is also important to ensure the conditions around disaster-affected people helps them slowly return to normal, while their basic needs such as water, shelter and food are coming. In line with this, CWS would provide psychological first aid for 200 affected children, women and men, aimed at providing emotional support for affected-families. Visits with psychological volunteers are designed to help soothe trauma.
